Dallas Crime Rates- Posted March 3, 2009
Dallas has the highest crime rate per capita in the United States and has been the most crime laden city for 9 years straight. South Dallas is well known by residents for being an extremely dangerous place especially at night. Business burglaries are much higher in Dallas than in New York. Also Dallas does not always report crime making it even more difficult to understand the full extent of the problem. As the United States economy weakens crime tends to rise. There are many precautions that can be taken to ensure a safe visit to the Dallas area.
First, stay away from areas of high population. These areas generally attract crime and because of the high population allow criminals hide from the authorities. Also these areas are laden with criminals, many of which are not even being fully sought after by the police because of the already overwhelming task that local authorities are currently burdened with. Many “early faze” criminals are free to roam the streets and are only apprehended once an offense of high magnitude has been committed. These early stage criminals roam the streets of Dallas and South Dallas and pose a significant threat to our city.
Second, try to fly under the radar. If you attract attention to yourself, you will become a target to those around you. Avoiding situations where people can see that you have money or possessions is key. Driving through areas with fancy cars is a sure fire way to draw unwanted attention.
Third, carry pepper spray and learn how to protect yourself. Self defense courses and emergency preparedness are great ways to prepare for bad situations. Even the toughest criminals are no match for an eye full of pepper spray.
Mainly, the most important thing to stay safe in Dallas is to just be aware. Be aware of the bad parts of town. If an area seems to be run down with many people walking the streets, chances are drug problems in the area. Also be aware that the local police departments only have a minimal hold on the crime in Dallas. Over half of all murders go unsolved. Many hardened criminals walk the streets with little fear that they will ever be caught even if they commit more offenses.
